So you want to develop an investment path!  The first thing you must do is define your personal goals in the matter. Are you looking to simply supplement your current income? Do you want to increase you’re nest egg and continue putting more money to work for the future? Perhaps you would like to trade on a daily or weekly basis and produce a full income to live on.  If you are an older retiree you may simply want a few fixed investments along with a few dividend yielding stocks. If your just starting out you may want to simply invest in mutual funds, CD’s or a 401K fund to build your assets up.

If you’re conservative you may want to look into Government issued instruments that have a very long perspective on growth. If you have an appetite for quick profit and are willing to take a little risk then you may want to consider individual stock ownership and option trading. If you have an inheritance, recently sold a business or have come into larger sums of money you might consider futures and other day trading techniques.

After you’ve done this you need to put your targets in writing and tack a figure to it—then decide if your goals are reasonable in relation to the money you’re working with, the knowledge you have and the time you’re willing to invest.

6/2/13    Mortgage backed securities are essentially bond instruments made up of mortgages originating from issuing banks (Mortgage originators) who then repackaged them as other investments.  Once they were sold the risk was then transferred to the new holders. This was a great deal for the banks but a dubious deal for the future investors.

They originated in the mid 20th century to increase a banks lending power as well as insulate them from catastrophe if the community suddenly had problems such as the closure of a major employer; which could easily cause it to become insolvent. The subsequent securities were then divided into various risk categories and given to investors/holders outside of the community in a process called securitization.

There are many types of MBS, intended for different investment objectives, make sure you understand what is available and the risks involved when working with your broker. Collateralized debt or mortgage obligations are larger groups that are less expensive but could contain more risk. You can also purchase them within a mutual fund.

Under normal circumstances these types of investments can deliver safe regular returns since traditionally a persons mortgage is the first priority in their budget. The recent tightening of lending standards only reinforces this concept
