NET METERING    Aug 31, 2026

Due to increasing solar panel adoption, I wanted to go over recent proposals taken by many utility companies around the country. Net metering, if you’re not already familiar with it, is a way to take advantage of summer sun and use extra credits to pay higher winter utility bills, it’s also a way to cut monthly utility bills by using less electricity off the grid. Between these 2 factors many people have been able to lower their utility bills by hundreds of dollars, especially those that live in sun drenched areas with a house that faces the sun, true north in the Southern hemisphere or True South in the northern hemisphere. The initial investment can be anywhere between 15K – 30K or more depending upon the size of your house.

In recent months many utility companies are arguing that non-solar customers are paying a larger share of grid costs because of net metering. In response, they’re trying to raise grid fees for solar customers and eliminate rollover credits earned during the summer months. These changes would undermine the core benefits that made solar attractive in the first place. The added charges are often promoted through messaging that not only attempts to justify the fees but also pits non-solar customers against solar customers. This essay examines that argument by going over hidden advantages that roof top solar offers them that they may not like to admit.

Solar customers produce electricity that utilities receive for free and then resell at full retail price. That lowers utility overhead and increases profit margins. Every kilowatt-hour a solar home exports are one less kWh the utility must generate. One less kWh the utility must buy wholesale. One less kWh the utility must transmit long distances. This directly lowers fuel costs, generator wear, transmission losses, peak-load stress, and wholesale purchase costs.

Solar reduces peak demand, the most expensive part of grid operation. This is where utilities spend the most money. It reduces peaker plant emergency staffing, transformer overheating, line losses, wholesale purchases at inflated prices. To compound this benefit solar production reduces emergency generation, reduces transformer stress, reduces line losses, reduces the need for expensive peak purchases. This ends up with massive overhead reduction.

Solar reduces long-term infrastructure expansion costs. This can delay or avoid transformer upgrades, substation expansions, transmission line additions, new peaker plants, emergency backup systems. In addition, lower current flow through transmission lines reduces line heating, arching risk, ignition probability which subsequently reduces wildfire mitigation costs, insurance costs, legal liability exposure ultimately leading to lower overhead.

Solar helps utilities meet state renewable mandates cheaply thus reducing compliance costs, renewable procurement costs, carbon credit purchases and emissions compliance costs. It reduces pollution controls, carbon offsets and environmental compliance.

In conclusion, removing roll over credits removes the core reason people installed solar in the first place. If you remove that then utilities are effectively selling any extra power produced without compensating people. They’re also proposing an increase to grid  charges. But to satisfy yourself you must research and go over the numbers yourself. So, do they really need the extra money or are they just trying to do what many industries do, what any waning business model demands, pad the bottom line and expand the old business model instead of giving consumers a fair shake and doing the right thing. Besides, roof top solar is more resilient, more distributed, and more beneficial to homeowners. The search results confirm this clearly: utility‑scale solar may win on cost per watt and efficiency, while rooftop solar wins on grid stability, local control, and reduced land use. Solar farms in Colorado and many other communities are not an attractive addition to the landscape while some of the newest roof top designs can actually look chic on a home.
